Death dreams

1.

I died in this water,

a river I’ve never seen.

I know it —

stone banks and

coming from where to an endless place.

I have died here.

You told me —

coming close to whisper,

standing to my side.

I can barely hear you

over the rush of change

carving pathways through

stone like days do.

2.

I dreamed you stood next to me

by the edge of a river

and told me how you died there

flowed down the water

your body gone

You threw yourself into the current

and it didn’t hurt once it was

finished, just all that cloudy water

rushing

over your eyes

until seeing stopped.

You walked beside me

through the sunflower field

and told me how you died there

sank down into the dirt

your body gone

You threw yourself into the flowers

and it didn’t hurt once it was

finished, just all the yellow petals

falling

over your eyes

until seeing stopped.

3.

I died in this dream

again, different and

like this water always flowing forward.

Was it you or me?

Where is this place I know by heart?

What did I hear?

Listen, you told me —

I am an ending coming.
